Forthcoming US Senate bill would set age minimum for social media access

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators is expected to introduce legislation setting age requirements for children to access social media platforms, The Washington Post reports. The bill would prohibit children under 13 from accessing social media altogether, while children ages 13-17 would be allowed with parental consent. However, the anonymous Senate aide who spoke with the publication did not detail how children’s ages would be verified.

Montana governor seeks changes in TikTok ban bill; EU can offer case for 'new digital regulation'

  • Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte, R-Mont., delayed signing a bill that would ban TikTok on all devices in the state and sought legislative changes, The Wall Street Journal reports. The changes sought reportedly "would broaden the ban from applying specifically to TikTok … and cover social-media applications that provide certain data to foreign adversaries."

OpenAI launches ChatGPT privacy option; Apple, BigID create AI features

  • OpenAI launched a new privacy feature allowing users to "withhold their ChatGPT conversations from use in training" its algorithm, Bloomberg reports. The feature enables users to turn off their chat histories with a toggle switch in their settings, and their conversations will no longer be saved in the sidebar. Users are also now able to email themselves a downloadable copy of their data.

Belgian DPA conducts DPO survey

Belgium's data protection authority, the APD, is focusing on the role of data protection officers as a 2023 priority and is participating in the European Data Protection Board's coordinated enforcement action. The APD said it mailed a survey to DPOs that explores tasks within their organization, workflow methods, expectations and more. Results will be aggregated in a public report.

Maine reintroduces biometric privacy legislation similar to Illinois' BIPA

Members of the Maine Legislature reintroduced a biometric information privacy bill, similar to Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, StateScoop reports. As proposed, Maine's bill would "prohibit private entities from selling (biometric) information" and require written consent from an individual before another entity can acquire that person's biometric data.
