Garante investigates app that falsifies voices

Italy’s data protection authority, the Garante, is investigating an application that reproduces false, realistic voices of well-known individuals. The Garante has asked “The Storyteller Company — Fakeyou” to provide information on how its technology works, what personal information is processed and the purposes for data processing. The company must also provide the location of any data centers that maintain personal data.

Australian regulators investigate telecommunications provider breach

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and Australian Communications and Media Authority are investigating a data breach that affected 10 million Optus cellular customers, Reuters reports. The OAIC said it will investigate the company’s data protection efforts and compliance with privacy laws, while the ACMA is investigating whether its maintenance and disposal of personal data meets industry obligations.

Illinois jury finds railway company guilty of BIPA violation

A jury in U.S. District Court in Chicago found the BNSF Railway Company violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, awarding $228 million to truck drivers who filed the lawsuit, CBS News reports. The court determined the company violated the privacy of 45,000 drivers by implementing a driver fingerprint system without obtaining written consent.Full Story
