Legislation requiring parental access to children's social media raises surveillance concerns 

Politico reports on U.S. state legislative proposals enabling parental oversight requirements around children's access to social media accounts. Regulations were proposed in California and Maryland, while Utah passed a law requiring parental access to social media accounts of residents under age 18. Privacy advocates are raising concerns.

US International Trade Administration seeks feedback on EU-US, Swiss-US DPF Principles

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration seeks stakeholder input on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework Principles and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Framework Principles. Both sets of principles also contain "respective sets of Supplemental Principles." Under both frameworks, the ITA will administer and supervise, which entails maintaining and publicly listing U.S. organizations that "self-certified" to the Department of Commerce.

NTIA seeks comments on AI accountability

The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration published an "AI Accountability Request for Comment." The NTIA is seeking input on creating trust in artificial intelligence through policies supporting the development of AI audits, assessments, certifications and other mechanisms. "Much as financial audits create trust in the accuracy of a business' financial statements, so for AI, such mechanisms can help provide assurance that an AI system is trustworthy," the administration said.

EDPB set to render binding decision on Meta data transfers

The European Data Protection Board's 13 April plenary meeting will feature exclusive discussion on the board's binding Article 65 decision in the case regarding lawfulness of Meta's EU-U.S. data transfers brought by Ireland's Data Protection Commission. The decision, a product of the EU General Data Protection Regulation's dispute resolution mechanism, will decide whether Meta can maintain EU-U.S. transfers using standard contractual clauses or face a potential EU service blackout until a legal transfer mechanism is adopted.

LinkedIn Live session explores establishing data protection laws in a UAE 'free zone'

IAPP Vice President and Chief Knowledge Officer Caitlin Fennessy, CIPP/US, will host a LinkedIn Live session titled "Privacy Around the Globe: Dubai International Financial Centre" 12 April.
