US House subcommittee hearing to focus on data brokers, privacy protections

The U.S. House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing on the role of data brokers and online privacy protections 19 April. The hearing will "shine a light on the role of data brokers and educate Americans on unchecked collection of their sensitive personal information," House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., and subcommittee Chair Morgan Griffith, R-Va., said.

South Korea's Supreme Court orders Google to disclose if it shared citizens' data

South Korea’s Supreme Court ruled Google must disclose if it shared citizens' personal data with third parties, Reuters reports. The decision stemmed from a 2014 complaint brought by four plaintiffs against Google and its South Korean subsidiary. The case served as an effort to compel the company to publicize if it shared users' "privacy data," and plaintiffs alleged it was shared with the U.S.

Indiana finalizing seventh US comprehensive state privacy law

The U.S. comprehensive state privacy law patchwork was bound to grow this year, but by how many states? Iowa recently joined the fray, and now Indiana is on the cusp of making seven states with comprehensive laws. The Indiana House took a unanimous 98-0 vote Tuesday to grant final passage to Senate Bill 5 on consumer data protection. Senate concurrence and governor approval are the final steps to enactment.

AEPD urges EDPB probe into ChatGPT

  • Spain’s data protection authority, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, called on the European Data Protection Board to formally review the EU General Data Protection Regulation compliance of OpenAI's ChatGPT, Reuters reports. An AEPD spokesperson said the issue was raised with an eye toward "harmonised actions can be implemented within the framework of the (GDPR's) application."
