US CBP found to use AI tool to screen travelers, refugees, citizens

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection is using an artificial-intelligence-powered tool that screens travelers, refugees and asylum seekers, as well as U.S. citizens, Vice reports. The tool can link individuals’ social media posts to their Social Security numbers and their location data, according to a CBP memo obtained by the publication. The tool, called Babel X, allows a user to input a piece of information about an individual, such as their name, and receive a trove of information about the person in return.

Quebec DPA opens consultation on consent requirements

Quebec's data protection authority, the Commission d'accès à l'information du Quebec, announced a consultation on the collection of consent in relation to data protection. Public comments will support potential guidance on obtaining consent for personal data use under provisions of the province's Act Respecting the Protection of Person Information in the Private Sector and the Access Act that take force September 2023.

France's constitutional court approves use of AI surveillance cameras for Olympics

France’s Constitutional Court ruled the government could proceed with installing artificial intelligence-powered surveillance cameras ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Politico reports. In its decision, the court ruled the installation of the cameras did not erode privacy rights because human operators will "permanently control (of) 'the development, implementation and possible evolution of algorithmic processing.'" The cameras are trained "to spot suspicious behavior," such as abandoned luggage or identify crowd stampedes.

Meta opposes Australian Privacy Act reforms for targeted advertising

Meta informed the Australian government it "strongly opposes" Privacy Act reforms that would hamper its ability to utilize direct marketing and targeted advertising, the Australian Financial Review reports. Meta also opposes provisions that give citizens "an unqualified 'opt out' option" for personal advertisements. "The largest concern there is this 'opt out' of targeted advertising," Meta Global Privacy Policy Director Melinda Claybaugh said.

EDPB finalizes guidelines on law enforcement's biometric deployments

The European Data Protection Board published finalized guidelines on the use of biometric technologies by law enforcement. The board said the guidance highlights how facial recognition "should only be used in strict compliance with the Law Enforcement Directive" and "if necessary and proportionate" in the context of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Free smart TV startup's privacy notice comes with strings attached

Privacy advocates are raising concerns over smart television startup Telly, which is giving away 500,000 smart televisions free of charge, TechCrunch reports. The free TV comes mounted with a second display underneath the 55-inch screen, which shows advertisements while a user watches programming. According to Telly’s privacy notice, it collects data about what users watch and their location.
