Study explores data protection measures of 'free' digital business models

The digital innovation laboratory, LINC, of France's data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés, published results of a study exploring whether websites and mobile apps based on a free business model are less privacy protective. The study reviewed 350 of the 5,000 most-visited digital services in France. It found paywall business models "stand out as the most intrusive," while the "freemium business model" follows.

Roundup: Ireland, UK, US and more

In this week's Global News Roundup, Ireland's Data Protection Commission is set to impose a significant fine to Microsoft over LinkedIn's alleged targeted advertising practices. The U.K. Information Commissioner's Office came out in support of the proposed Data Protection and Digital Information Bill. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission levied multiple fines against Amazon. And the California Senate approved legislation placing restriction on data brokers' practices.

Texas tees up 10th US comprehensive state privacy law

The U.S. is on the cusp of one-fifth of its states adopting their own comprehensive state privacy legislation, with Texas set to be the 10th. The Texas Legislature approved HB 4, the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, via conference committee 28 May, and it now awaits final action from the governor. The bill, to become effective 1 July 2024, carries similarities to existing state laws, while presenting nuances that will impact privacy professionals.
