Ireland's human rights commission says biometric bill lacks protections

Ireland's Human Rights and Equality Commission said a proposed bill allowing state police to use facial recognition technology lacks sufficient safeguards to prevent rights violations, Irish Legal News reports. It recommended the bill be studied by an independent body to find any other potential issues and that strict safeguards be put around biometric technology in policing.Full story

US Senate committee to hold votes on several AI bills

The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation is expected to mark up several bills addressing artificial intelligence 22 May, Axios reports. The bills likely to be addressed are the CREATE AI Act, the Future of AI Innovation Act, the Artificial Intelligence Research Innovation and Accountability Act, and the Promoting United States Leadership in Standards Act. Other legislation that may be considered are a bill addressing AI uses in the workforce and a bill setting AI auditing standards.
