Newsom tempers discussion on California AI regulation

Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., does not want the swath of proposed artificial intelligence legislation being considered by the California State Legislature to hamper the state's leadership on AI, Bloomberg Law reports. Newsom wants California to "continue to dominate" the AI space while urging against a regulatory regime that stymies innovation. "If we overregulate, if we overindulge, if we chase the shiny object, we put ourselves in a perilous position," Newsom said.

Ireland's DPC says Big Tech working with regulators for AI products

Members of Ireland's Data Protection Commission indicated leading Big Tech companies are engaging with EU regulators to ensure artificial intelligence products comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation, Reuters reports. The DPC officials said AI presents several major data privacy concerns, including potential public data scraping, the legal basis for the use of personal data and how AI developers will allow data subjects to exercise their rights under the law.
