New Mexico files lawsuit against Snapchat over children's online safety concerns

New Mexico claimed in a lawsuit that social platform Snapchat is not doing enough to protect underage users from child predators on the app, The Washington Post reports. Snapchat spokesperson Russ Caditz-Peck said the company shares "concerns about the online safety of young people and are deeply committed to Snapchat being a safe and positive place for our entire community, particularly for our younger users."Full story

Japan's PPC publishes results of proposed APPI revisions consultation

Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission released a report on the feedback it received on potential amendments to the Act on the Protection of Personal Information. The PPC received a response from 72 organizations and 1,659 residents that suggested potential opt-out consent methods as well as stronger protections for children's data and biometric information.Full story

The Wall Street Journal reports chief privacy officers are seeing their teams take on more digital governance responsibilities. Citing the newly released IAPP Organizational Digital Governance Report 2024, 80% of privacy teams have expanded their work in additional areas like artificial intelligence and data governance. Mastercard Chief Privacy and Data Responsibility Officer Caroline Louveaux said privacy officers often face varying, and sometimes competing, demands as new privacy and data laws emerge.

EDPB to hold stakeholder event for developing pay-or-consent guidelines

The European Data Protection Board will hold a remote dialogue for stakeholders to provide input on guidelines for applying data protection law to pay-or-consent models 18 Nov. The guidelines will build on the board's prior pay-or-consent opinion, but the forthcoming guidance "will have a broader scope of application."
