US lawmakers applaud FTC privacy rulemaking, call for more action on COPPA

Several U.S. lawmakers wrote a letter to Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan to praise the agency’s efforts to curb surveillance of children online. The letter coincided with the FTC announcing an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for online privacy. In the letter, Sens. Ed Markey, D-Mass., Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Reps. Kathy Castor, D-Fla.

Multiple member states push European Commission to expand scope of Cyber Defence Policy

Six EU member states expressed their desire for the European Commission to “aim high” in an impending EU Cyber Defence Policy proposal, according to a “non-paper” obtained by Euractiv. The countries of Austria, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain offered recommendations in five policy areas for the proposal.

European Parliament co-rapporteurs circulate compromise amendments for AI Act

European Parliament co-rapporteurs Dragoş Tudorache and Brando Benifei disseminated compromise amendments for the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, which were reviewed by Euractiv. A new article proposed to extend the AI Act to the metaverse environment “that meet certain conditions.” The criteria included requiring an “authenticated avatar,” built for large scale interaction and allows for real-life social interactions.
